The Akkan regenerates [[antimatter]] at a much faster rate than the [[Protev Colony Frigate]], allowing you to colonize planets in rapid succession by using this ability. The Akkan is also much tougher than a colony frigate, and unlikely to be killed by militia even if you are passing through extremely heavily defended gravity wells. This allows the Akkan to quickly access distant planets that would otherwise be out of reach of regular colony frigates in the early-game, and makes it the default capital ship choice on larger maps.

In [[Patch 1.18]], this ability was changed to offer one extra free extractor at each level (it used to offer 0 -> 1 -> 2) as well as a temporary boost to extractor income. This made it, in most situations, superior to the [[Progenitor Mothership]] [[Colonize (Progenitor Mothership)|Colonize]], which had formerly been the best by default. This has since given TEC the uncontested advantage in early-game colonization and economic expansion.
